The Devil • XV

I don't like this card, it is such a tempo lost depending on when you draw it, it is just as bad as the big brother,The Tower. I am running a 3 player RTTCU and Rex was unfortunate enough to draw this card. So far, we are on wages of sin, and he has drawn the devil in his starting hand everygame. It is such a hit in a starting set up. It, thankfully, doesn't cost 4, but that's basically still money for an ally, or asset that I just lost. Not to mention the action, and a card i can mulligan off. If you pull this at the end, that would be fine. Most cards are on the field, and I can just commit cards, and play events. I hate seeing this card and if that was the idea then good job.

I want to run a skill heavy deck and get devil, and an asset heavy deck and get tower, but thats never going to happen is it? — Zerogrim · 295
Compared to a lot of weaknesses -3 resources is, relatively, very little. — fiatluxia · 68
It's also an action to play. Still, I think, it really depends on the investigator. I had "The Tower" in Minh, and would have rather choosen "The Devil" over it, if I could. — Susumu · 381
Still, compared to any of the "2 actions to discard" weaknesses, this sure stings more everytime. Skidds can take an extra action for two resources, and that is considered not cheap. "The Devil" is rather 3 resources, compared to the second action. Of course, if drawn late, it doesn't really matter (except in Patrice for the handsize), because you likely won't play any more assets. "The Tower" can still be a pain then. — Susumu · 381
I remember I pulled tower while playing wini :( not fun. — Therealestize · 74
Ugh just drew this with my Bob Jenkins deck... — normsherman · 66
Does anyone know why this cards come with 2 copies instead of 1 as other basic weaknesses? — rav · 1
Tbh..... so you have another chance of getting it :/ — Therealestize · 74
Is there any way to get rid of this after you've played it? Or does occupying the Tarot slot mean that any other Tarot assets are unplayable after you play The Devil? — szwanger · 2
If you play another Tarot, it would replace this. Same with all assets slots. — nckjnsn · 1
Can this be played at the same time as another asset with Ever Vigilant for a discount? — nckjnsn · 1
Ah, I guess the answer is yes since it says play assets “one at a time” — nckjnsn · 1
Moonstone

What about Bob Jenkins?

If you have Moonstone in your hand and Bob Jenkins is another player using his additional action to play an asset from your hand, is he "you"?

It reads "At any time, an investigator at your location may reveal to you the Item assets in their hand. You may take an additional action during your turn, which can only be used to play an Item asset from the hand of an investigator at your location, under their control. (Both investigators may spend resources to pay its cost)."

What do you say? Can Bob Jenkins play Moonstone from your hand?

Yes. See — suika · 9505

Bah, keep hitting enter. Anyway. It's not clear how you are supposed to interprete "You" here. But it doesn't matter. If you interprete "You" to mean Bob Jenkins, he can play the card because Moonstone is not in his hand. If you interprete "You" to mean the card's controller, Bob Jenkins can play the card because the restriction doesn't apply to him. — suika · 9505

Grounded

Mystics are chronically short of actions and resources. Grounded (3) saves on both by being a 0 cost Fast asset.

Imagine a Holy Rosary that doesn't take an accessory slot, costs 0, is Fast, and provides 2 health soak and it's easy to see the value of Grounded (3). For spellcasting purposes, that permanent +1 skill value isn't too dissimilar to the bonus provided by the Rosary, except it doesn't work on treacheries which makes it slightly worse.

It's great for saving you a Relic Hunter if you want that accessory slot for something else. For those of us playing on Expert, or even Hard, stacking this with the Rosary provides a much welcomed boost to the success chance of spells, with the option to boost further using resources to reach "anything but the autofail" thresholds against higher shroud/fight values. On Standard, this means that you can opt to run a different accessory: Heirloom of Hyperborea for Agnes, Lucky Cigarette Case for Dexter, or Empty Vessel for Akachi without giving up that sweet +1 . Base 4 mystics also get a buff as a result since it's much easier for them to make up the difference.

In exchange for giving worse stats than other composures, Grounded comes with an excellent 2/2 spread. Mystics can usually protect it against the mythos with Deny Existence, but it'll blow up on a single spell backlash from Shrivelling or the Azure Flame, so keep that Eldritch Inspiration, Counterspell, or Time Warp handy. If it does get discarded though, most mystics won't have recursion or the draw power to fetch it from discard, so better take a second copy.

Sadly, it doesn't work with Close the Circle or Mind's Eye, both of which would have really liked the skill boost.

Strongly consider including this on all 4 mystics and any mystic that's taken a few trauma on top of their Arcane Research.

Question: What does the ‘Limit 1 Composure in play’ actually mean? When there is ‘limit once per turn’ on a location, without the word group, that’s a pass for everyone to use it once a turn. These composures are not mentioning the group limit. I didn’t want to include those just because of the limit, but with this, they would be more considerable. Thanks for your thoughts. BTW, the same limit is on the Venice masks. — holandato · 2
@holandato - It would state Group Limit 1 Composure in play if you can only have 1 Composure for the Group in play. Limit 1 Composure in play means you can't have have 2 Grounded, or Grounded and another Composure in YOUR play area. — Lemmingrad · 21
Down the Rabbit Hole

I can't help but notice that Edge of the Earth comes with a lot of level 1+ cards that can be upgraded further. This includes a whole Spell suite, like Divination (1) and Divination (4), which are also good with Arcane Research, but then also stuff like On the Trail (1) and On the Trail (3) and Ice Pick (1) and Ice Pick (3), among others. This synergizes with the investigators in this set that have very limited access to their "off-class" level 0 cards, but also seems like an interesting puzzle with Down the Rabbit Hole. Lily Chen can take this card and use it to discount the upgrade from Butterfly Swords (2) to Butterfly Swords (5), and Norman Withers can do the same for Blur (1) to Blur (4), although it will take one of his 5 Mystic Level 0 slots.

But considering the drawback of this card, is it worth it? You'll pay an extra XP just to get the new Level 1 card in your deck, and get refunded that penalty when you upgrade. Net XP, zero. Ideally, you need to have 14 cards to upgrade in a 8-scenario campaign to get the full value here (we'll see how Edge of the Earth's supposedly different campaign structure affects this), so you'd better really want those non-Level 0 upgradable cards. The EOTE investigators don't really have any other options, though, because Lily & Norman don't have that many Level 0 cards that they could take that upgrade into cards of their "off" class. So, frankly, this card anti-synergizes with the investigators in the box. Your only out is to take In the Thick of It and some trauma for three Level 1 cards, but there still aren't going to be enough cards to upgrade. Strange. But it makes me think we'll have future cards that give you an XP bonus for upgrading cards, without this particular drawback, or more ways to start your deck with non-level 0 cards.

Other Mystics & off-class Mystics should consider this card, though, because of the variety of upgrades now available, including in this set. Daisy Walker can get a discount on upgrading Professor William Webb, and take In the Thick of It to get the upgrade for Eon Chart, among other things. And Father Mateo, starting with an extra 5 XP can spread it out across five Level 1 Spells and get a further discount with an Arcane Research or two, or maybe just spend your starting XP on cards you can't upgrade and don't want the penalty on, and use your Down the Rabbit Hole to upgrade Guts and Robes of Endless Night. Up to you!

Upon further consideration, Lily has plenty of targets with this card with a full collection, since Neutral cards like Overpower have a Guardian upgrade, and Holy Rosary switches classes in its upgrade. You may also want an Emergency Cache or two that can be upgraded. Take In the Thick of It to pick up two Brand of Cthughas at deck creation, five level 0 Guardian cards that can be upgraded (there are plenty), two Enchanted Blades, two Holy Rosarys, and then a Neutral card of your choice to round out the 14 upgradeable cards. This might not be the strongest Lily deck but it will work. — dscarpac · 1211
@dscarpac i'm also hearing that rabbit hole's line "Increase the experience cost for you to purchase new cards by 1." will not make taking 3 level-1 cards at deck creation possible, because they'll each cost +1 to take. No official word on this, but I hear because it's on a separate line than the "After each scenario of a campaign..." line, it also applies to — Renmabo · 602
I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just "purchase" Down the Rabbit Hole last when you build your deck. Additionally, the level 1 cards aren't "new" cards: there never were any other cards in that deck slot to begin with. — dscarpac · 1211
it does say — shikasshadow · 1
so see if get this right. If i was to purchase level 1 Book of shadows it would cost me 2XP but after the next scenario i was going to Purchase Leve3 book of shadows it would cost me anything because of Down the rabbit Hole, saving me 1xp. Do i have this wrong? — Invisiblecam · 1
The upgrade process only cares about the difference in level between the two cards. No matter how much XP you spent to purchase a Level 1 card, going from Level 1 to Level 3 will cost you 2 XP. Down the Rabbit Hole will discount that by 1. So yes, overall you'll end up paying 3 XP, which is still cheaper than buying the Level 3 card outright, which would have cost you 4 XP if you have this card. — dscarpac · 1211
Can you take this card out of your deck with "Adaptable" after you have upgraded most of your deck? — Ponso · 2
Permanent cards can never be removed from your deck. — MindControlMouse · 45
Lets say I want to purchase a new shrivelling(3). Can I just purchase a level 0 and immidiately upgrade it to level 3? If so, that would cost only 3xp with DTRH — Son_of_Gothos · 128
Jury-Rig

Am I wrong or does Jury-Rig work like Lucky? It says "during a skill test", so that sounds like after I draw the chaos token, then I could use Jury-Rig if I wanted. Other mid-test cards are Ancient Covenant and "Lucky" Penny and both function before the skill test has finished.

EDIT: It doesn’t work like Lucky. It’s more like Unexpected Courage.

RiftArkham · 1
No, it can only be used during player windows on a skill test, which are before and after committing. — SSW · 216
the lightning bolt means you can trigger it during player windows, the last player window in a test is after committing cards and before revealing tokens, sadly no lucky timing is available. — Zerogrim · 295
To add to SSW's answer: You can tell this because the action has the 'lightning bolt' free trigger icon, which means that it can be triggered during a player window. You can review the player windows in the timing charts at the end of the Rules Reference Guide. (During skill tests there are two: one right before the 'commit cards' step and one immediately after. — Death by Chocolate · 1489
(sorry Zerogrim, your comment hadn't loaded for me yet when I posted mine) — Death by Chocolate · 1489
And SSW hadn't loaded when I posted mine...thats...spooky — Zerogrim · 295
Can Akachi take this card? — Joannes · 1
no because it uses "durability" not "charge", Akachi can only take stuff that says charge — Andy · 31
Can you use it on a knife ? I guess not as the discard is a cost...i want to recur it with wendy..so i only want to use it on items which discard so i can replay the event..and always get +6 — xarathornx · 1
Can you use jury rig on pocket Multitool? Basically: does it stack? — K1282 · 1
