Lola Hayes first met Wendy Adams outside a small theater in Arkham, when she found the girl hiding backstage to escape the cold and rain. Instead of throwing her out, Lola gave her food and a safe place to stay for a while. From then on, Wendy began to trust her, seeing Lola as one of the few adults who did not treat her like a problem. Through Arkham’s artistic and literary circles, Lola also came into contact with Luke Robinson, “The Dreamer,” who recognized something deeper in her strange dreams. Where Lola saw scenes, roles, and masks, Luke saw signs of the Dreamlands.

At the same time, Tommy Muldoon had already noticed Wendy on the streets of Arkham. As a police officer, he had found her in alleys, warehouses, and shelters, but instead of arresting her for petty trouble, he often let her go with a warning. When rumors spread about people sharing the same dream as Virgil Gray, Wendy heard details in places the police could never reach and passed them to Tommy. He realized that her information matched official reports that had never been made public. And so the four were drawn together: Lola and Luke prepared to follow the dream from within, while Wendy and Tommy remained in the waking world to protect them and investigate anything that might go wrong.
