It’s been months since I’ve last played Arkham Horror, so let’s imagine Jenny took her time with parking the vehicle. It calmed her. All three pieces of the Y’ha-nthlei regalia are inside the lighthouse and Jenny is determined to get them. As I a player, I’m getting the Union and Disillusion vibes from this scenario. Perhaps I’m being too optimistic, but with the full suite of eleven recovered memories I might be trying for an earlier non-standard end. That said the Terror of Devil Reef is still alive, so it could, say, collapse the lighthouse on top of Jenny. Who knows. I’m hoping I’m not too rusty after the long delay. The deck upgrades were rather plain, aimed at giving the investigator more resources to for an efficient set-up and later to burn on Streetwise. I’ve got to admit, being able to begin the scenario with nine resources feels encouraging. Onwards!

Pre-Mulligan Hand: "Watch this!", Lockpicks, Jenny's Twin .45s, Fine Clothes, Intel Report

Opening Hand: Lockpicks, Leo De Luca, Lone Wolf, Mauser C96, Nimble

A Light in the Fog

Agenda & Act: Fog on the Bay & The Lighthouse

#1

  • PLAY Leo De Luca
    • Excellent, Leo is exactly the guy we want to see exploring the Lighthouse with Jenny. We’re missing one resource to play all three assets, so we’ll forgo Lone Wolf in the opening round. We don't want Jenny to be out of actions while scouting, so we’ll move immediately.
  • PLAY Lockpicks
  • MOVE to Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage (yellow key)
    • Yup. I’ve expected Jenny to find some keys here. But, I’ve expected them to open the lighthouse itself, not a prison cell. Presumably this means I need to be more aware of the story card next to the scenario reference card.
  • INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (-1, 1 clue, 2 supplies left)
  • Upkeep: draw Working a Hunch, 2 resources total.

#2

  • Mythos: 1/4 doom, Dissonant Voices
  • INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (, 1 supply left)
  • INVESTIGATE ( Streetwise, -4)
    • Jenny is snapping the lockpicks one after the other, the more invasive methods don't do the trick and our girl cannot rely on he intuition due to Dissonant Voices. An entire round-worth of actions is wasted.
  • DRAW Easy Mark
  • DRAW Easy Mark
  • Upkeep: draw "Watch this!", 2 resources total, discard Dissonant Voices.

Board State Reminder: 8 health, 7 sanity, 3 resources, 2 clues

In Play: Leo De Luca (1 horror), Lockpicks (1 supply), Lone Wolf

In Hand: 2× Mauser C96, Nimble, "I'm outta here!"

#5

  • Mythos: 4/7 doom, Rotting Remains (, 3 horror, Oceiros Marsh engages)
    • He engages, but doesn't attack. That's OK.
  • Lone Wolf
  • EVADE ( Streetwise, -1, exhaust Oceiros Marsh, claim the blue key)
    • Hmmm... That's a head-scratcher. Do I have Jenny go up the stairs so she can satisfty her compulsion to check whether her sister is there, for reasons unknown, or do I have Jenny bypass Oceiros and go down to the basement?
  • MOVE to Lighthouse Basement (Upper Depths)
  • advance agenda 2a→3a (display Oceiros Marsh, The Tide Rises & Worshippers of the Deep)
    • Yup. These caverns are quite extensive. It'll take at least six rounds to cover all of them. From the previous scenarios I know some of these locations are flooded, so I'll lay down the Waveworn Idol for some extra actions.
  • PLAY Waveworn Idol
  • MOVE to Tidal Tunel (The Moon Room, partially flooded)
    • Hmmm... Secondary escape route? With extra conditions? This gives me major House Always Wins vibes.
  • Waveworn Idol (MOVE to Tidal Tunnel, Underwater Cavern, fully flooded)
  • × Worshippers of the Deep (move to Tidal Tunnel, Deep One Nursery, partially flooded)
    • Jenny doesn't have the larva with her. Honestly, why would a woman such as Jenny carry a malformed larva with her?
  • Upkeep: draw Elina Harper, 2 resources total.

#6

  • Mythos: 5/10 doom, Kiss of Brine (, 1 damage, fully flooded)
    • It notably doesn't turn off the ability to get the card and resouces at the end of the round. But, it does negate Lone Wolf.
  • Waveworn Idol (MOVE to Tidal Tunnel, Shrine to Hydra, red key)
    • Hmmm... No peridot cluster either, but with Streetwise I should be able to brute force two investigation tests. However, with Kiss of Bride Jenny has can't recover resources, so... I'll get one clue and do some scouting afterwards. Move actions are wasteful, but it's still better to do something rather than doing nothing.
  • INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks ( Streetwise, -1, 1 clue)
  • MOVE to Tidal Tunnel (Underwater Cavern, fully flooded)
  • PLAY Hard Knocks
  • INVESTIGATE (, Lurking Deep One moves to Lighthouse Stairwell)
  • × Worshippers of the Deep (move to Tidal Tunnel, Sunken Archives, fully flooded)
    • Excellent! Jenny was forced deeper into the cave complex, but located the second important key. Despite the slow start, I think I should be able grab both red and black keys and and escape via Falcon Point. Teaching of the Order only allows to deal with one flooded location and between the black key or shorter route to the Resign location, I'll have Jenny go for the former.
  • Upkeep: draw "I'm outta here!", 2 resources total, discard Kiss of Brine.

Board State Reminder: 7 health, 4 sanity, 2 resources, 1 clue

In Play: Leo De Luca (1 damage & 1 horror), Lockpicks (1 supply), Waveworn Idol, Lone Wolf, Hard Knocks

In Hand: 2× Mauser C96, Headdress of Y'ha-nthlei, Awakened Mantle, Elina Harper, "I'm outta here!"

#7

  • Mythos: 6/10 doom, Totality ()
    • That's an immensely cool name. Sells the dread of being surrounded by water from all sides.
  • Lone Wolf
  • Teachings of the Order (remove flood token)
  • INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (+1, 1 clue, claim the black key)
  • MOVE to Final Depths
  • Final Depths
    • I see a Tidal Pool... It ought to have the green or purple key inside.
  • Final Depths
    • I see a Pump Room... Alas, it seems I've wasted Teachings of the Order. Ehhh... OK, I'll have Jenny unflood the Moon Room just to be on the safe side. I do wonder why the fish people need a pumping station in their lair? Perhaps they do get a lot of air-breathing guests after all.
  • MOVE to Pump Room
  • Pump Room (commit Mauser C96, , Lurking Deep One moves to Upper Depths)
    • It's been some time since I saw this many Minus Fours and Elder Things pulled in one game.
  • Upkeep: draw Jenny's Twin .45s, 5 resources total.

#8

  • Mythos: 7/10 doom, Hideous Lullaby (, 1 horror to Waveworn Idol, 1 horror)
    • Even worse token pull! Jenny outright covers her ears to block the sounds.
  • Lone Wolf
  • PLAY Elina Harper
  • Pump Room ( Streetwise, +1, The Moon Room unflooded, Pump Room partially flooded)
    • Oh. I misread the Pump Room ability previously. There was no need to be afraid of passing the test too well, so I could've overcommitted to the last pumping test.
  • Waveworn Idol (MOVE to Tidal Pool, facedown key)
  • INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (-4, 1 clue, discard Lockpicks, claim the green key)
    • That means that purple key is in the last unrevealed Tidal Tunnel in the upper row. I'm tempted to go for it and risk an agenda advance. I'll see what happens when the agenda advances, I might still have time to get both it and Izzie.
  • MOVE to Upper Depths
  • Upkeep: draw Easy Mark, 2 resources total.

In Hand: Mauser C96, Awakened Mantle, "I'm outta here!", Leo De Luca

#10

  • Mythos: 9/10 doom, Totality (, partially flooded)
    • Jenny intended to bypass the Lurking Deep One by swimming via the flooded caves, but hesitated before dipping her toes in the water. Somehow, confronting the monster directly seemed to be the better option. Yup, in this situation Totality threatening 2 horror is enough to reverse our priorities. Izzie first, purple key second.
  • Waveworn Idol (MOVE to Lower Depths))
    • If I'm given the option to include the regalia into the deck, I'll definitely include Waveworn Idol. Not so sure about the other two, but this one does the job well.
  • Lone Wolf
  • PLAY Mauser C96
  • MOVE to Upper Depths (Lurking Deep One engages, 1 damage to Elina Harper)
  • FIGHT with Mauser C96 (4 ammo left, Hard Knocks, -2, defeat Lurking Deep One, 1 resource)
  • MOVE to Lighthouse Stairwell
  • Upkeep: draw Eureka!, 5 resources total, discard Totality.

Somehow, I still managed to be surpriced by the Falcon Point locations disappearing. It's the same idea as with House Always Wins, but executed more in-theme and on much broader scale. I like the fact that this time around blazing through the scenario too fast makes one unable to get the diving suit. This almost happened to Jenny, if not for all the Minus Fours and Elder Things at the beginning. Instead she missed one memory, which I should've realised due to the nursury flashback being numbered XIII, but never noticed during the game. Jenny's perfect streak is broken. Still, at a glance this particular memory doesn't seem too important. In any case, the scenario is decently challenging, mostly due to the fact you can't get around getting the clues from Sunken Archives and Shrine to Hydra with the usual tricks. Plus, I can see the difficulty varying wildly based on the location of the Moon Room and the Pump Room.

Until next time!
