This card would be so much better if it was simply a Uncage the Soul for guns, play a firearm and reduce its cost by 3, the thing about playing an upgrade is super clunky, you will hardly ever have this card a gun and the upgrade all at the same time in hand, a bunch of upgrades are fast already and it also requires you to have the resources to pay for your gun (which will probably still cost 1 or 2) and the upgrade. I’d much rather just have the extra 1 resource discount.

Pretty sure the upgrade is free there, one (design intention POV) because there are so many fast upgrades as to render this near meaningless otherwise, two (rules POV) because the wording on other cards like Dirty Deeds, Joey Vigil, Prepared for the Worst, Farsight and many more all say "Play it, paying its cost". If the phrase "play it" on a card already implied paying the cost, then there would be no need for that "paying its cost", especially as it is repeated on so many cards that one can assume intent behind that wording. Therefore is there is no "paying its cost", no need to pay. Still, this is a three-card combo probably best used with Stick to the Plan for full effect, so 4 cards and quite a few XP - which, going to all that trouble to set it up would be a third argument for that free upgrade :-) — Borghal · 96

Maybe it's the card that will make me play Well-Maintained at last: I play a firearm, attach Well-maintained to it then a few other upgrades, use all the ammo, discard the firearm, get it back to my hand and finally use Primed for Action to replay it with a single upgrade in a single action at -2 resources.

Joey "The Rat" Vigil gives you a way to discard the firearm and get resources, Custom Modifications with Counterbalance checked gives you additionnal card draw.

Emergency Cache(0) grants +1 tempo- 3R at the price of 1 card & 1 action- whereas Primed For Action gives potentially +2 tempo: spend 1 card + 1 action, gain a discount of 2 resources + 2 actions.

But its dependencies make it near unplayable. You need 2 other cards (the gun and upgrade) ready to go, and Guardians can't afford to stall playing their weapon.

Stick To The Plan, however, can guarantee you have Primed and Custom Modifications (the only non-fast Upgrade that can be SttP'd) from the start. Now you're only relying on luck for 1 card, the weapon itself.

So:

  • if you've earned 6XP to get SttP,
  • and you wanted to play Custom Mods,
  • and you don't take Leather Grip on Custom Mods,
  • and you feel really confident you'll mulligan into a gun on your draw,
  • and you can wait until turn 2 to play that gun,
  • and you didn't have anything else you wanted to use those two slots on SttP for,
  • and all of the above feels better than just paying 2xp for Emergency Cache(2)...

...then Primed For Action is a great way to gain 1 tempo over ECache!
