Isn't this Young lady supposed to be weak and useless or something? I must be doing it wrong..

Well with Rita's thin cardpool and 5 , her playstyle is rather limited, but we knew that already.

I paired her with Joe Diamond, hoping that if Rita really does perform weakly, her buddy can do everything by himself. The idea was that at least the useless athlete can carry Joe (equipped with Safeguard and later on, Safeguard) around and keep exhausting enemies. The expectations were kind of low. And while Safeguard and especially the upgraded Safeguard turned to be the real star of the show, the girl did surprising amount of difficult job by herself!

Now what can Rita actually do? A lot!

Survive. That means not only for herself, which is pretty much done with her natural buddy, Peter Sylvestre and the upgraded Peter Sylvestre, giving her the missing horror soak while improving the 2 important stats. She can also help the team face the encounter deck with stuff like A Test of Will, Alter Fate and Fortune or Fate. If necessary, Rita can reasonably try to handle the unpleasant tests or on treacheries in anyone's threat area.

Keep enemies down. Evading is often enough and Rita's ability to deal 1 damage to the evaded enemy or to go away often make enough space for the clue-gatherer. Waylay the unpleasant hunter or a Victory enemy. But the real strength comes with the Ornate Bow. Testing at 7-9 and having Live and Learn to handle makes Rita the natural archer. Finding the action to reload is not such a problem. "I'm done runnin'!" is rather situational card: a free engage, a way to spare an arrow or to slowly murder an enemy when your bow lies at the bottom of your deck - mostly, this card are 2 icons.

Move. Reveal locations, be where you need to be and ideally, move your Safeguardian around. Whatever Rita does, Track Shoes is her real staple. With Peter Sylvestre out, she tests 7 to 3 which is almost a guaranteed success, now imagine you evade an enemy, make a free move, trigger Track Shoes and make another free move. She's just anywhere and everywhere!

Get clues. Clues win the game and everyone should participate, especially if it doesn't hurt them much. Combine "Look what I found!" with Take Heart. Break, Enter and likely win a free evasion, then free damage or move - still one action right? Belly of the Beast is another free clue when you're taking no extra effort. As a nice and most useful bonus Rita can use Pilfer. Overall this deck has potential to pick 14 clues, not even considering Resourceful.

All these events can become rather expensive so feel free to equip Rita with Sneak By, Emergency Cache, Take Heart and soon upgrade to Easy Marks. The card draw just happens without much effort.

The upgrade priorities are:

Ornate Bow 6XP, Peter Sylvestre 4XP ...and that's it. Then you can go wherever you wish.

You can strengthen the enemy managemed with Close Call and Cheap Shot.

If you're confident about the resources, why not upgrade to Pilfer?

Soon you'll get rid of Rabbit's Foot because you just don't fail.

Will to Survive + Ace in the Hole is a great combo for whatever you're trying to do. What is more fun than killing a boss in 1 turn? Even outside the combo, these cards are very strong, just remember the resource cost of Will to Survive - and as smart players know, never cut your economy.

Good start: mulligan for Peter, Shoes and Bow. It is completely ok to keep stuff that helps you draw, Take Heart and Rabbit's Foot. A copy of "Look what I found!" is usually good to clear the starting location (ideally, triggering Rabbit's Foot and Take Heart), letting your cluever do the real stuff.

That's about it: run around, evade enemies, shoot them to their deaths, protect the team and just be amazed how many clues this underestimated 2- girl can get.

Nice to see some love for my girl Rita. Nice decklist! I want to add some upgrade suggestions, since Edge of the Earth really made this Athlete shine even more.

-Enchanted bow. Yes, it's one less damage than Ornate Bow (particularly awkward against Hoods) and a slightly smaller boost, but cheaper XP and resource wise, does not require reload actions, and can be used to shoot pesky cultists, Whippoorwills etc. from afar.

-Sweeping Kick is arguably a better Cheap shot at only 1 xp and 1 resource, with Rita's ability it adds up to 3 damage in a single action. You can even run both at the same time.

-Crafty, or if you run cards like the aforementioned Enchanted Bow, LWIF, Lucky!, Close Call, Sweeping Kick, Eucatastrophe and Will to Survive, you may even use Prophetic for cost reduction on all those cards and/or skill boosts on abilities associated with them (e.g. Prophetic can boost your Enchanted bow attacks.

I haven't played with Rita much, but I do think that Joe Diamond is her ideal partner. His consistent investigation and combat covers her weaknesses of being inconsistent in either, which can leave Rita to focus on her strengths of evading and chipping in with her share of clues and damage every so often.

In a way, Joe and Rita is like a remixed version of Roland Banks and Wendy Adams. One focuses on the 'offensive' part of Arkham Horror. The other contributes to those departments in bursts while tanking damage and treacheries that the 'carry' investigator can ill afford. It's not apples-to-apples with the roles assigned to Rita and Joe, since Rita is also very susceptible to willpower treacheries given her low sanity score. But I do think there is still a clear division of labor, and each character needs the other to function at their best.

Totally agree with Chris's suggestions, 2 additional Enchanted Bows certainly make Rita much more consistent. Crafty or/and Prophetic can, with reasonably-looking risk, replace traditional economy cards. Sweeping Kick is another Rita card, the action compression on 2-health enemies is more than impressive. Great to see that designers think of "weaker" investigators when intorducing new expansions.

A pity that On Your Own doesn't work for events - "No Pete Rita" would certainly be fun to play.

I recently paired Rita with other (non-Safeguard) investigators. Not that Rita would underperform, she still does her part of the job - yet the run with Joe was so smoother (sometimes even ridiculously easy and fast) due to saving 2+ parnter's turns. I would even seriously recommend most seekers to go double Versatile and double Safeguard if Rita Young is on their boat.
